What a web designer does

Web design requires a certain amount of artistic ability, combined with a specific technical skillset. When you are searching for a web designer to build your website, you need to consider these aspects, and more.

With the advent of modern CMS solutions such as WordPress or Joomla, it is relatively simple for a non-technical person to put together an acceptable website. However, when there are problems with layout, functionality or when significant customisation is required, you need someone who can delve into the code. HTML, CSS, PHP and Javascript are the main languages used in modern web development, and your website designer should be comfortable with (or at least have a working knowledge of) these. If you need additional functionality your website designer should be able to provide it. If you see a draft and want changes to your website’s style and layout that shouldn’t be a problem. Your site should be build to modern standards and should be responsive. Generally, if you make a request and are told it’s not possible, that’s not a great sign.

Your web designer should also be able to arrange suitable hosting for your site. He/she should also be able to arrange your domain name registration, or advise you on how to do it yourself. If you are building an eCommerce site he/she should be able to arrange an SSL cert and secure payment gateway. Your website designer should also add your site to search engines and optimise it (using SEO) so that you get a decent amount of traffic within a reasonable amount of time.

Lastly, your website designer should be able to listen. While a website designer can guide you in the right direction, at the end of the day it’s your site, and it will be the features and colours that you choose, and the content that you add that will (for the most part) determine whether people will visit your site and return. Your website’s appearance and usefulness is just as important as that of your physical office, studio or shop. It is important that you are completely happy with it.
